what to expect…
What is an acupuncture treatment like?
Acupuncture treatments at Mother Evergreen start with an interview. We’ll discuss why you came in, and I’ll ask questions about your health history to gain an understanding of your situation. If you have any musculoskeletal pain, I may walk you through some range of motion or muscle tests.
The next step is pulse diagnosis. I will feel the pulse at your wrist (the radial artery) to determine the course of treatment. Feeling details in the pulse is the traditional way East Asian medicinal practitioners gain insight into your body system.
We will then proceed to acupuncture! I will insert 2-8 needles at various points on your body, then let you rest for 10-20 minutes. After feeling the pulse again, we may do another set of 2-8 needles.
Bodywork (tuina massage, cupping, or gua sha) or a personalized herbal formula may be included in your treatment, based on practitioner discretion.
How does acupuncture work?
Acupuncture works in many ways!
Some acupuncture points work due to being locations of fascial intersection, some work by interacting with the nerve branch that provides sensation to that area, some work by releasing taut bands of muscle tissue, and some points’ function can only be explained by Chinese medical theory (a complex, age-old understanding of the body that still offers a lot of utility today!)
Will it hurt?
No! Acupuncture needles are infamously "as thick as a cat whisker”. About 18 acupuncture needles could fit inside a syringe used for injections. Other than an occasional light pinch, the needles do not bring much sensation. Clients often say they don’t feel a thing!
How should I prepare for treatment?
Eat a little something before arriving and come hydrated. Wear loose-fitting clothing that can easily be rolled up past elbows and knees.
